Headmaster Letter

Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,

Thanks to the many families who joined us this past Thursday for High School Preview Night!  This evening event was a great opportunity to learn more about our curriculum and culture, as well as the many support services that we offer to our students.  The highlight of the evening was hearing from a panel of North Phoenix Juniors, who testified that our curriculum is challenging yet rewarding, that our teachers care deeply about them, and that the friendships they have developed in High School are incredibly meaningful.

Perhaps that's why 80% of North Phoenix 8th graders choose to continue their education with us in High School.

In speaking to their experience at our Academy, our student panelists demonstrated the wisdom of another Great Hearts Philosophical Pillar, i.e. that we do not employ a "character curriculum."  Students are formed by the culture of the school, implied and explicit, and each student's choices to lead within it.  We take our cues from the ancient philosophers when it comes to character development.  Character, we believe, is the result of habit, and forming habits takes consistent practice over a significant period of time.  Becoming wise and virtuous does not happen all at once--far from it!  It is a lifelong pursuit that our students are only beginning.  Even so, we have seen that an intentional, schoolwide culture can truly transform young people during their years with us at the Academy.  That is why every aspect of our school aims at cultivating intellectual, moral, and aesthetic life.  I am so proud of our High School students, and I am incredibly grateful for the partnership of our wonderful families and faculty who mentor and support these bright young scholars!

With Devotion,
Headmaster Weinhold
