Headmaster Letter

Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,

Welcome back from what I hope was a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday.  The Weinholds enjoyed a delicious smoked Turkey & lots of quality time with my mother, who visited us from Texas.

During our time off, I began reading a book by Greg McKeown called Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less.  As we enter the holiday season, I think this book is especially appropriate.  It’s tempting to try to fill our lives with many obligations, events, and purchases during this busy time of the year.  McKeown argues, however, that pursuing less leads us to make the vital choices that fuel real personal and professional progress.  Rather than moving one millimeter in a million directions, we choose one path and really move forward in a given direction.  Here are a few of my favorite quotations from the book thus far:
Essentialists see trade-offs as an inherent part of life, not as an inherently negative part of life. Instead of asking, “What do I have to give up?” they ask, “What do I want to go big on?”
When we forget our ability to choose, we learn to be helpless. Drip by drip we allow our power to be taken away until we end up becoming a function of other people’s choices—or even a function of our own past choices. In turn, we surrender our power to choose. That is the path of the Nonessentialist.
The right “no” spoken at the right time can change the course of history.
The principles from this book could be transformative for both parents and students as we close out 2017 and begin a new year.  By getting clear on the essentials, all of us have an opportunity to make critical choices that affect our happiness every day.  By pursuing less in a disciplined way, we create the possibility for pursuing our deepest loves with all we have.

With Devotion,
Headmaster Weinhold
