Headmaster Letter

Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,

I am proud to announce that this past Wednesday my precious daughter Sophia Grace Weinhold was born!  She weighs in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces, and stretches to a respectable 20 inches in length.  She has already stolen my heart.  It will take a Herculean effort of willpower not to spoil her rotten!

Shelly is recovering well after a heroic labor and delivery, and her parents have traveled from Texas to help us with the transition during these first few weeks with Sophie.  We are so incredibly blessed by their generosity and love.

Our two-year-old son, Edmund, has been sweet and gentle with his sister thus far.  However, he does occasionally cast a doubtful look upon her.  We are attending to the lad carefully, too, so that he knows his sister will not encroach upon, but rather amplify our affection for him.

Thanks to everyone in the North Phoenix Prep community for allowing me to spend time with my family during this joyful  moment in our lives.  I am particularly grateful to Ms. Coughlon for her leadership during my furlough.

Sophia will be a member of the Class of 2034.  As I think about her future and the world that she will inhabit, I see even more clearly the reason for my vocation.  The most meaningful and lasting difference is made in the world through the rearing and education of our children.  Although that difference is not made in an instant, we can ultimately achieve it through a steady, patient focus on the True, the Good, and the Beautiful.

Thank you for trusting your precious children to our care.  I am especially grateful at this moment for that trust, and I am especially hopeful that our shared effort to cultivate the hearts and minds of our students will make this world a place where our children can truly flourish.

From my Family to Yours,

Headmaster Weinhold

NPX MS Cross Country Teams Sweep Great Hearts Championship Races

Our boys and girls MS cross country teams dominated the Great Hearts Championship Races this past weekend taking home both 1st place team trophies. Jamie Stelnik and Kennedy Archer started the day off coming in 1st and 2nd in the girl’s race. Jamie becoming North Phoenix Prep’s first girl to take the individual title, running the 2.1 mile course in 13:35 (6:29 mile pace). Kate Hauptman (10th), Claire Warner (14th), and Gabrielle Pohlad (16th) rounded out our Top 5. Honorable Mention goes to Rylie Smith who was in 8th place on the finishing stretch until she injured her leg and was unable to finish the race without assistance.
  • Girls Team Scoring – Top 3
  • North Phoenix – 40
  • Glendale Prep – 60
  • Scottsdale Prep – 76
  • The boy’s team dominated the meet by having our Top 5 all finish in the first 11 spots.
The boy’s team was led by Thomas “Jeep” Koska (4th) and Noah Berlanga (5th). Not far behind though was Richie Johnston (7th), Sammy Johnston (8th), and Aidan Davis (11th). What was almost more impressive was that North Phoenix Prep had 7 athletes in the Top 20 and 11 athletes in the Top 35.

  • Trivium Prep – 129

Headmaster Letter

Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,

Recently, the Arizona Board of Regents released a report on the college graduation rates of Arizona's (public) high school class of 2009. Veritas Preparatory Academy's class of '09 had the second-highest college degree completion rate in the state, with 77.8% finishing a 4-year program within 6 years. Topping the list for the first time was Tempe Prep, at 81.3%; BASIS Scottsdale lagged in 4th place with a 70% college graduation rate.  Area district schools came in even further behind.  Horizon High School’s rate is 49%, Shadow Mountain’s is 37.5%; North Canyon’s is 29.8%, Paradise Valley’s is 26.1%, and Thunderbird’s is 23.8%.

The key point is this: our "AP free" liberal arts prep school model is getting kids through college faster--and therefore less expensively--than is the AP model employed by other schools. We fully expect that when our first high school and college graduates are included in future years, North Phoenix Prep will claim her spot along with Veritas near the top of these state rankings. The reason for this is that our model prepares young people with moral and academic lives that have been well-structured, and this allows our students to thrive in the freedom of higher education without becoming distracted or burned out. Our model prepares students to love learning and pursue it with passion and discipline in their college years and beyond.

We are proud to partner with you in offering this to our students, and we thank you for your continued support.

With Devotion,

Headmaster Weinhold
